The UN World Commission on Environment and Development, chaired by former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland, alerted the world to the urgency of making progress toward economic development that could be sustained without depleting natural resources or harming the environment.

Written by an international group of politicians, civil servants and experts on the environment and development, the Brundtland Report changed sustainable development from a physical notion to one based on social, economic and environmental issues.

This book positions the Brundtland Commission as a key event within a longer series of international reactions to pressing problems of global poverty and environmental degradation.

It shows that its report, "Our Common Future", published in , covered much more than its definition of sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" for which it became best known.

It also addressed a long list of issues which remain unresolved today.

The book explores how the work of the Commission juggled contradictory expectations and world views, which existed within the Commission and beyond, and drew on the concept of sustainable development as a way to reconcile profound differences. The result was both an immense success and disappointment. Coining an irresistibly simple definition enabled the Brundtland Commission to place sustainability firmly on the international agenda. This definition gained acceptability for a potentially divisive concept, but it also diverted attention from underlying demands for fundamental political and social changes.

Meanwhile, the central message of the Commission — the need to make inconvenient sustainability considerations a part of global politics as much as of everyday life — has been side-lined.

The book thus assesses to what extent the Brundtland Commission represented an immense step forward or a missed opportunity. This book examines the international experience with sustainable development since the concept was brought to world-wide attention in Our Common Future, the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development. Scholars from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds engage with three critical themes: negotiating environmental limits; equity, environment and development; and transitions and transformations.

The Brundtland Report ’Our Common Future’

In light of the Sustainable Development Goals recently adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, they ask what lies ahead for sustainable development.

Our Common Future is a page long report from the World Commission on Environment and Development voicing the deep concern over both the speed and irreversibility with which the planet's environmental resources are being squandered. The Commission's main task was to come up with a global agenda for change. Its mandate spelled out three objectives: 1 To re-examine the critical environment and development issues and to formulate realistic proposals for dealing with them 2 To propose new forms of international co-operation on these issues that will influence policies and events in the direction of needed changes 3 To raise the levels of understanding and commitment to action of individuals, voluntary organisations, businesses, institutes, and governments.

This reader's guide is a slimmed-down concise version of Our Common Future, to make it available to a wider audience of both ordinary people and decision-makers. Looking back at the last century with its devastating wars, genocides, environmental disasters, more often than not caused by humans, an urgent need for a paradigmatic shift in human relationships suggests itself.

Other factors point in the same direction, such as movement towards globalization, reflected in greater fragmentation of society, of growing migration of persons across state boundaries, resulting in ethnic clashes of culture and competing claims over territories. This means that greater social cohesion is needed while at the same time a heightened awareness of difference and mutual respect has to be fostered. It is widely accepted that education is a crucial agency in developing a new awareness of "the self" and "the other" - education at the formal, informal and non-formal level.

The essays in this collection reflect on the possibilities of a "common future" and on educational programs and projects that are aimed at transforming the vision of a more humane world into reality.

The Forum, sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences, Smithsonian Institution, American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, and Sigma Xi, was organized to inform the public about the changes occurring in the global environment and the implications for public policy. International Law: Our Common Future offers a dynamic approach to the study of international law that actively engages students in ways that more traditional textbooks do not.

One way this is achieved is by focusing on recent events, including international terrorism, extraordinary rendition, the legality of drone strikes, environmental devastation, and human rights. Another is by having students wrestle with actual court rulings rather than being given short summaries of these decisions. These cases, which are from a wide array of international, regional, and domestic tribunals, are followed by a series of provocative and challenging questions and prompts that will naturally lead to classroom discussion and debate.

The book recognizes the importance of visual media in terms of student learning. In addition to photographs of individuals and events that feature prominently in the development of international law, each chapter has sections entitled "International Law at the Movies" which highlight feature films and documentaries that explore the topic at hand. What students will quickly come to realize is that international law is not a distant and abstract entity, but rather, is intimately connected to various aspects of their daily lives.

The book shows some of the remarkable changes in international law, most notably the declining importance of the role of the state.

As a final point, the book is written in an engaging, almost conversational, style that is accessible to students in a wide array of academic disciplines. Cents and Sustainability is a clear-sighted response to the call by Dr Gro Brundtland in Our Common Future to achieve a new era of economic growth that is 'forceful and at the same time socially and environmentally sustainable'.

The Brundtland Report argued that not only was it achievable, but that it was an urgent imperative in order to achieve a transition to sustainable development while significantly reducing poverty and driving 'clean and green' investment. With some still arguing for significantly slowing economic growth in order to reduce pressures on the environment, this new book, Cents and Sustainability, shows that it is possible to reconcile the need for economic growth and environmental sustainability through a strategy to decouple economic growth from environmental pressures, combined with a renewed commitment to achieve significant environmental restoration and poverty reduction.

Beginning with a brief overview of some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, the book then explains 'decoupling theory', overviews a number of factors that can undermine and even block efforts to decouple in both developed and developing countries, and then discusses a number of key considerations to assist the development of national 'decoupling strategies'. The book then focuses on presenting evidence to support greater action, not just on climate change, but also on decoupling economic growth from the loss of biodiversity and the deterioration of natural systems, freshwater extraction, waste production, and air pollution.

In the lead up to the United Nations Earth Summit and beyond, Cents and Sustainability will be a crucial guide to inform and assist nations to develop strategies to significantly reduce environmental pressures, strengthen their economy, create jobs and reduce poverty.

Also known as The Brundtland Report, it offers a classic approach to problem solving by first asking a productive question.

How do we protect the world we live in for future generations, while at the same time stimulating economic and social development right now? The solution the work proposes is "sustainable development," defined in the report as humanity's ability "to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Solving the problem of workable sustainable development became a hot topic, leading to the birth of a new academic discipline, environmental economics.

The book offered a solution to the problem of ensuring sustainable development by highlighting the critical importance of international cooperation. Download or read Our Common Future.

The notion of power is essentially neutral; power can be used to benefit others or to harm them, to build or to destroy. Care, on the other hand, is not a neutral force; it aims at increasing the wellbeing of others. Power and care are not incompatible: power, imbued with care, can achieve more than a powerless motivation to care; power, without the intention to benefit others, can be ruthless.
